US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin met with South Korean Minister of Defense Suh Wook Thursday. The two counterparts agreed to develop new operational plans to deal with what Austin described as North Korea’s destabilizing behavior.

North Korea remains under US-led UN Security Council sanctions over its missile and nuclear programs. South Korea wants to see sanctions suspended and an official declaration to end the Korean War Two - items apparently not near the top of military chiefs’ agenda.

Meanwhile, outside South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense, activists called for Seoul to disentangle itself from an alliance with the US, and take control of its own national defense.

Austin also called out China over its military buildup, as Washington now plans to move more forces -- an attack helicopter squadron and an artillery division headquarters -- to be stationed in South Korea.

The meeting here between the US and South Korean military leaders comes following the release of the Pentagon’s 2021 Global Posture Review. The US will now place even more emphasis on deterring China and North Korea, with Washington calling for more help from its allies.
