The United States reported the highest number of new COVID-19 cases in the world in the last week, a World Health Organization (WHO) report has shown.

Amid a surge of COVID cases fuelled by the Delta variant, the US reported 500,332 new cases for the week which ended on July 25, according to WHO. The country saw a 131-percent increase in new infections compared with the week before.

According to WHO, the US was followed by Brazil, Indonesia, the United Kingdom, and India.

New infections were up by 8 percent in the world, with more than 3.8 million new cases.

“An average of around 540,000 cases were reported each day over the past week as compared to 490,000 cases reported daily the week before,” WHO said.

“This increasing trend is largely attributed to substantial increases in the Region of the Americas and the Western Pacific Region,” the United Nation’s health agency said.

The total number of cases worldwide could surpass 200 million in the next two weeks if the trend continues.

In the last week, the COVID-19 deaths also increased by 21 percent all over the world. Most of the 69,000 deaths occurred in the Americas and Southeast Asia.

The spike comes as delta continues to spread across the globe. Vaccination rates have also slowed in the US.

US daily coronavirus infections are rising again after numbers fell in May and June.
The sharpest increases in COVID cases are in US states with lower vaccination rates, such as Florida, Texas, and Missouri.

In southern US states, fewer than half of residents have received their first dose in some cases.

More than 34 million Americans have been infected with COVID-19 and over 615,000 deaths recorded so far in the US.
