Pakistan-Afghanistan bilateral ties witness another low

Bilateral ties between Pakistan and beleaguered government in Kabul have witnessed another low after Kabul recalled its ambassador and other senior diplomats from Islamabad citing security concerns. It happened after the daughter of Afghan envoy to Islamabad was briefly kidnapped and released. The incident according to police, happened during her back and forth movements on several cabs she herself hired for her travel between Islamabad and nearby city of Rawalpindi.

The diplomatic row has preceded extra ordinary territorial gains by Taliban who now claim to have taken over 85 percent Afghan territory following exit of almost all US led NATO troops from Afghanistan.

Kabul has blamed Islamabad to have done little to contain the movements of Afghan Talibans from its nearly 2700 kilometer long porous border.

Islamabad has repeatedly accused President Ashraf Ghani’s government and India together to have provided sanctuaries to anti-Pakistan terrorists who killed tens of thousands of people in this part of the world over the years.

Pakistani officials say the Taliban listen to them but they do not control them and over the years Islamabad has significantly lost its influence on them. However, Kabul is not willing to accept this argument given Taliban’s ongoing military campaign recapturing districts after districts with little resistance from security forces in neighboring Afghanistan.
