Asia World Cup: Iran beat Hong Kong 3-1
Iran have earned a crucial 3-1 win over Hong Kong in Group C of the Asian qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup 2022 and AFC Asian Cup 2023.
Team Melli who had previously suffered consecutive defeats to their group rivals, Iraq and Bahrain, were in need of a win and Ali Gholizadeh put them in front from the tightest of angles in the 23rd minute.
Vahid Amiri then doubled Iran’s lead right after the hour mark, when his shot took a deflection and nestled into the back of the net.
Karim Ansarifard made in 3-nil with six minutes remaining, but Hong Kong did not let Alireza Beiranvand get away with a clean sheet as they scored a consolation just a minute later.
With the win Iran have nine points and will next meet Bahrain on Monday.
