The UAE and Interpol: Undue Influence

The UAE and Interpol: Undue Influence With 194 state members, Interpol is the only police and intelligence authority that truly claims to span the world. Yet, this international body has proved to be too susceptible to abuse by despotic regimes. In fact, Interpol has suffered considerable problems with improper influence from some member states whose legal and political systems are at odds with international standards or even basic human rights. The United Arab Emirates is a glaring example of a state seeking to improperly influence Interpol through its petrodollars and other mechanisms. Whereas some human rights changes have been made in the UAE, critics say those changes amount to barely more than window dressing, with torture and repression still as a stock in trade of the country. It is not hard to imagine what could happen if such Abu Dhabi heads Interpol, something which many insiders consider as an imminent danger.
