UK to set up new ‘vanguard’ Special Forces Regiment to conduct global missions
Barely four days after the release of the Integrated Review of Security, Defense and Foreign Policy, the Ministry of Defense (MoD) has unveiled its plan for the establishment of a new Special Forces regiment.
The new Ranger regiment will incorporate four infantry battalions which are expected to operate in “environments” consistent with Special Forces activity.
This new force is expected to be anywhere from 2,000 to 4,000 strong depending on resources and requirements.
An MoD spokesperson said the new Ranger regiment will be “routinely deployed” around the world in support of UK and “allied nations” defense and security.
The new regiment is expected to “compliment” the skills and mindset of existing Special Forces regiments, notably the notorious Special Air Service (SAS).
To that end, the Ranger regiment is tasked with carrying out “high threat” missions in conflict zones around the world.
According to the Defense Secretary, Ben Wallace, the new Ranger battalions will be at the “vanguard” of a “more active and engaged” armed forces.
That view was echoed by the Chief of the General Staff, General Sir Mark Carleton-Smith, who described the new regiment as the “vanguard of the Army’s global footprint”.
The Integrated Review of Security, Defense and Foreign Policy calls for a more proactive British military and diplomatic role in the world, backed up by lighter and more technologically-savvy armed forces in addition to an increase in nuclear weapons.
