Trump slams Biden for migrant ‘tsunami’ at border, says situation ‘out of control’

Former US president Donald Trump

Former US president Donald Trump has accused President Joe Biden of inspiring a "spiraling tsunami" at Mexico border, saying Biden’s reversal of his immigration policies led to "mass incursion" into the United States.

Trump released a statement saying, “Our border is now totally out of control thanks to the disastrous leadership of Joe Biden.”

“A mass incursion into the country by people who should not be here is happening on an hourly basis, getting worse by the minute. Many have criminal records, and many others have and are spreading covid,” Trump’s statement read.

“Interior enforcement has been shut down — criminals that were once promptly removed by our Administration are now being released back onto the street to commit heinous and violent crimes,” the former US president added.

Biden has rejected that there is refugee crisis at the border, saying that “God willing”, the government will be able to handle the influx of migrants illegally crossing the US-Mexico border.

Trump said the Biden administration has “given the smugglers and traffickers effective control of our border” and predicted that the border crisis would get worse.

Biden issued a flurry of immigration-related executive decisions after he assumed office, including orders to end “extreme immigration enforcement”, and to preserve and fortify the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which gives work permits and protection from deportation to people brought illegally to the US as minors.

Biden also halted construction of Trump’s Mexico border wall and ordered an end to the “Remain in Mexico” policy, under which tens of thousands of asylum applicants were awaiting rulings in Mexico.

The decision has led to an influx of refugees and migrant children from South and Central America to the southern US border in recent weeks.

Trump said, “When I left office, we had achieved the most secure border in our country’s history. Under Biden, it will soon be worse, more dangerous, and more out of control than ever before.”

“The spiraling (migrant) tsunami is overwhelming local communities, depleting budgets, crowding hospitals, and taking jobs from legal American workers,” Trump noted. “Under Biden, it will soon be worse, more dangerous, and more out of control than ever before. He has violated his oath of office to uphold our Constitution and enforce our laws.”

The Biden administration has been sharply criticized by both fellow Democrats and Republicans for its handling of the refugee crisis at the border.

The president’s order to use Trump-era detainment facilities to house migrant children – which Democrats would often use to accuse Trump of putting “kids in cages” – has drawn criticism from both sides.

The Department of Homeland Security says it is expecting unprecedented number of unaccompanied minors to cross the border this year after an increase in the last few months.

A Pentagon spokesperson said Friday that the Fort Lee, Virginia military base is even being looked at to possibly house the expected migrant children.
