Record arms industry profits in EU amid rising poverty

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the European Defence Agency’s annual conference has taken place online.
The event normally prompts protests as it brings together arms dealers, policy makers and politicians while civil society representatives are banned. The usual rhetoric, however, was peddled out at this year’s conference.
Campaigners say the EU and NATO create security threats to feed the arms industry, which is active in every one of the EU’s 27 nations and has an annual turnover of more than 100 billion euros.
The ongoing process to create an EU army means that even more taxpayer money is being spent at a time when the COVID-19 is pushing millions of citizens into poverty. Activists describe the EU’s arms industry as immoral.
President Donald Trump’s ‘make America great again’ slogan was mocked during the conference.
Anti-war activists believe those who hold that justice would be better served in the world under Joe Biden’s presidency should examine the history books.
