Sheikh Zakzaky’s trial continued in a Kaduna State High Court in Northern Nigeria with the presentation of two prosecution witnesses.

The two witnesses were officers of the Nigerian Army who made their presentations in court while journalists stayed outside. Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky is being tried for culpable homicide, unlawful assembly, disruption of public peace among other allegations, which the Islamic Movement has described as fabricated and baseless.

In December 2015, soldiers of the Nigerian Army attacked Zakzaky’s home and worship center killing over three hundred and forty of his supporters. No soldier has been charged for the mass murders of Zakzaky’s supporters despite the recommendation of a Judicial Commission of Inquiry set up by the Kaduna State government. Sheikh Zakzaky has been in detention for close to five years in violation of the ruling of a Federal High Court ordering for his release.

Despite being a public trial, no journalist or any member of Zakzaky’s family has ever been allowed inside the courtroom. Meanwhile, Zakzaky’s supporters have continued to demand for his release in accordance with the order of a Federal Court.
