Heavy rain and blustering winds struck the island of Jeju on Wednesday (September 2) as Typhoon Maysak approached South Korea.

Typhoon Maysak brushed past Okinawa on Monday (August 31), picking up strength as it moved northward and intensified ahead of a forecast landfall in South Korea.

Video obtained by Reuters shows high waves, storm surges and strong winds battering Jeju, as many residents remained indoors sheltering from the heavy rain.

Winds of up to 193 kmh (120 mph) were recorded at Kumejima Airport, located 110 km from Okinawa, overnight on Tuesday (September 1), local media reported.
