Taliban continue to spread violence amid endeavors for peace

The approval for the release of 400 Taliban prisoners was considered a green light to the militant group to lay down its arms and join an intra-Afghan dialogue. But facts on the ground show something different.

The Afghan government says the Taliban's ignoring the peace efforts is because the militant group is seeking to put more pressure on Afghan troops to gain more credit during any potential dialog.

Apart from Washington’s role in the Afghan peace process, other countries such as China, Russia and Iran have already declared readiness to cooperate with the Afghan government in bringing peace to the country, under an Afghan-led process.

It was in February when the Taliban and the US inked a peace agreement. Since then, the militant group has stopped targeting foreign troops. Instead, it has carried out more attacks and bombings against Afghan forces.
