Afghan election commission begins vote recount

Based on a latest statement released by Afghanistan’s Independent Election Commission IEC, the body has again begun to recount and audit the ballots. This is while the process had been stopped due to some reasons including technical issues and interference of some electoral teams in the process.

As the IEC’s statement says, the body is doing its best to implement the election law and regulations during the recounting process, however, the Stability and Convergence Team – led by Abdullah Abdullah- has already accused the IEC of working in favor of a specific team that is the State Builder team led by president Ghani.

The council of presidential election candidates is also among the critics of policies of Afghanistan’s Independent Election Commission. In the eyes of this body, the independent election commission has not retained its independence so far.

Let’s not forget that the story of the Afghan election crisis is not limited to tensions among the IEC and electoral teams, as the election crisis has severely affected different arenas of life in the country as well.

The preliminary results of Afghanistan’s September 28 Presidential election was scheduled to be released on November 14 but the rise of tensions between the IEC and some candidates have caused further delay. In such circumstances, only time will tell us, whether the Afghan government can successfully finalize the election or not.
