US after nothing but unrest in Iran: Larijani

Iran's Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani

Iran’s Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani says the United States’ goal concerning the Islamic Republic is nothing beyond fomenting unrest in the country.

“The US’s goal vis-à-vis Iran is nothing other than to disturb its security and set fire to the Iranian nation’s interests,” Larijani told the Parliament's Monday session.

The top legislator was reacting to incendiary comments made earlier by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Pompeo has voiced outright support for acts of violence staged across various Iranian cities under the guise of protests against fuel price hikes. The violence has seen anarchists destroying public property and setting ablaze banks and gas stations among other facilities.

Larijani said through the remarks, “He (Pompeo) openly supports immolation of the Iranian people’s properties through foolish shamelessness and opportunism, while calling it defending the Iranian people.”

Such comments, Larijani added, serve to openly manifest the US’s destructive ambitions regarding the Islamic Republic.

The government raised the prices last week in order to moderate the national consumption rate, which stands at 110 million liters, 40 million liters above the maximum domestic requirement.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Khamenei on Sunday voiced support for the decision to raise the prices, and warned that peaceful protests against the spike could be tainted by violence orchestrated by certain parties and thus foment sedition.

"In such incidents, hooligans, spiteful and evil people often enter the field and sometimes some youths, driven by emotion, accompany them and commit seditious acts. Such deeds do not fix anything other than adding insecurity to the problems," Ayatollah Khamenei noted.

Larijani expressed gratitude to Ayatollah Khamenei for the Leader’s “wise” remarks, which served to guide the people and authorities alike concerning the violent incidents.

The top legislator thanked the Leader for directing public attention to the agitators and rioters’ “oppressive behavior,” calling the attempt at sowing unrest in the country “a multilateral plot.”

The “profound and prudent” comments, Larijani noted, also served to guide the legislators to diligently pursue mechanisms to resolve the people’s economic troubles.

Enlightened by such remarks, the lawmakers would, through further convergence, try and leave no space for further disturbance in the country at the hands of the United States and its hypocritical and anti-revolutionary lackeys, Larijani concluded.
