Democrats discussing detentions amid impeachment inquiry: Tlaib
The Democratic lawmakers engaged in impeachment inquiry are having "serious discussions" about jailing those who do not comply with congressional subpoenas, says Muslim American House Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.).
“There have been actual serious conversations about what the logistics would look like... if we did have to force someone through a court order to come before the Congressional committee," she revealed in a new interview with Deadline Detroit in a report published Wednesday. "This is pretty uncharted territory for many of us and even for Congress.”
Putting allies of President Donald Trump in jail was brought up by Rep. John Garamendi (D-Calif.) earlier in the day.
"I think it's time to call in the sergeant-at-arms and march them off to our little jail, which we do happen to have," Garamendi said.
Trump is under pressure for tying US military aid to Ukraine to an investigation into Joe Biden, and his son, Hunter.
Trump's ambassador to the European Union (EU), Gordon Sondland, meanwhile, was apparently preparing to finally appear before US House despite formerly refusing to do so.
He would also tell the lawmakers that a text he sent denying understanding of quid pro quo between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a July phone call was dictated by Trump himself.
Sondland did not “want a quid pro quo … didn’t want anything from Ukraine" in exchange for military aid, a source was quoted as saying by the Washington Post.
Sondland is defying an order from the State Department not to comply with Democrats' impeachment inquiry and is scheduled to testify before three House committees on Thursday,.
"Ambassador Sondland believes strongly that he acted at all times in the best interests of the United States, and he stands ready to answer the Committee’s questions fully and truthfully," his attorney said in a statement this week.
