Djokovic, Federer advance in first round of US Open

Roger Federer has had a shaky start to the US Open, after defeating his Indian rival Sumit Nagal 3 sets to 1. 

The 5 time US Open champion had a poor performance in the opening set, and surprisingly lost it 6-4. The Swiss maestro re-grouped, and dismantled his Indian opponent, with a 6-1 win in the 2nd set. The 20-time Grand Slam winner dominated the next 2 sets as well, finished them 6-2 and 6-4, to wrap-up the match in 2 hours and 32 minutes. This is while, Federer has never lost a 1st round encounter, except at the 2003 French Open. The world No.3 will take on Bosnia’s Damir Dzumhur in round 2.

Meanwhile, world No.1 Novak Djokovic has started his US Open title defense with a straight sets victory over Roberto Carballes Baena. The Serbian ace who won 4 of the last 5 Grand Slam titles, defeated the Spaniard 6-4, 6-1 and 6-4, in An hour and 52 minutes. Djokovic will next take on Juan Ignacio Londero.

Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka has also advanced to the next round of the event after overpowering Italian rookie, Jannik Sinner, 3 sets to 1. The 2016 US Open champion won the first 2 sets 6-3 and 7-6 respectively. But, the 18-year old Italian bounced back and grabbed the 3rd set 6-4, before the Swiss, re-gained control in the 4th and finished it 6-3. Wawrinka will meet Frenchman, Jeremy Chardy.

Finally Daniil Medvedev continued his superb form at the US Open, with a 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Prajnesh Gunneswaran of India. The Russian who broke serve in the 1st game of the match, relied on his power serve to advance to the second round, winning 84% of his 1st-serve points. Medvedev will next face Hugo Dellien of Bolivia.
