Trump scheduled to hold campaign rally on day of Mueller testimony

In this AFP file photo taken on May 29, 2019 Special Counsel Robert Mueller arrives to speak on the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 Presidential election, at the US Justice Department in Washington, DC.

US President Donald Trump is scheduled to hold a campaign rally on the day former special counsel Robert Mueller is to hold his first testimony in the wake of the conclusion of the so-called Russia probe.

Trump’s 2020 campaign rally will be held in Greenville, North Carolina on July 17, the day Mueller is to appear before lawmakers.

"President Trump looks forward to returning to North Carolina and sharing the successes of the Trump presidency," Michael Glassner, the Trump campaign's chief operating officer, said in a press release. "North Carolina has one of the hottest economies in the nation, and that is directly attributable to the pro-growth, deregulatory policies of this administration. With one of the largest military populations in the nation, President Trump is eager to talk directly to the military men and women who have made this country the greatest on earth."

Trump has also taken the chance to undermine the probe, as always branding it as a “witch hunt.”

“Robert Mueller is being asked to testify yet again. He said he could only stick to the Report, & that is what he would and must do. After so much testimony & total transparency, this Witch Hunt must now end. No more Do Overs. No Collusion, No Obstruction. The Great Hoax is dead!” Trump tweeted Tuesday morning.

The US president who is hoping to be reelected into office after the 2020 vote has undermined the long list of Democratic contenders, claiming that it would be easier to beat them compared to his 2016 contender, Hillary Clinton.

“As most people are aware, according to the Polls, I won EVERY debate, including the three with Crooked Hillary Clinton, despite the fact that in the first debate, they modulated the sound on me, and got caught. This crew looks somewhat easier than Crooked, but you never know?”

In his last statement, the special counsel neither cleared the president nor charged him, throwing the ball into the Congress’ court.

Mueller argued that the decision not to charge Trump was made based on the Justice Department’s longstanding policy of not bringing charges against a sitting president.

He has agreed to testify on July 17 on his report into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.
