Indian security forces have fired tear gas to disperse Kashmiri protesters during Srinagar protests against civilian killings. Clashes escalated after security forces first fired in the air to drive away pro-independence demonstrators. The protests were called by pro-independence activists to denounce the surge in violence that has led to more civilian deaths in the disputed region. Over 300 Kashmiris were killed last year.
