Former US Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton has once again blamed her 2016 election loss to Republican Donald Trump on James Comey, the former head of the FBI, saying his actions “forever changed history.”

Speaking to CNN on Wednesday, Clinton said Comey’s handling of two high-profile investigations that shaped last year’s permanently changed the history.

Comey led the FBI’s investigation into Clinton’s use of a private server to exchange thousands of potentially confidential emails during her tenure as secretary of state, a clear violation of security protocols.

The probe overshadowed Clinton’s campaign and gave Trump and effective opportunity to question the former first lady’s competence to run the country.

The former FBI chief dropped all charges against Clinton shortly before the Election Day on November 8.

After the election, he began investigating President Trump’s alleged ties to Russia as well as a series of cyber attacks against Clinton’s campaign, which Democrats claimed were conducted by Russian hackers.

Trump fired Comey as he was busy heading the investigation into his ties with the Kremlin during the 2016 campaign and transition. Comey later testified that he believed Trump had fired him because he was unhappy with the Russian probe.

Trump has dismissed allegation, claiming he only wanted to mark a "new beginning" at America’s "crown jewel of law enforcement."

Clinton told CNN that Comey had mishandled her email case, repeating the allegations she has made in her latest book “What Happened.”

"I think it is important to focus on what happened because lessons can be learned," she added. "What is important is the fact that the Russians are still going at us. He himself admitted that before Congress."

Trump responds

Unsettled by Clinton’s direct jabs, Trump posted a number of tweets on Wednesday night advising Hillary to stop blaming others for her loss.

“Crooked Hillary Clinton blames everybody (and every thing) but herself for her election loss. She lost the debates and lost her direction,” he wrote.

“The ‘deplorables’ came back to haunt Hillary. They expressed their feelings loud and clear. She spent big money but, in the end, had no game!” the president fumed in another tweet, referring to Clinton’s description of his supporters as “a basket of deplorables.”
