Trump more unpopular than Obama ever was: Poll

US President Donald Trump

Americans’ opinion of the Republican Party and US President Donald Trump are at a new low, dropping below the worst rating of his predecessor, Barack Obama, according to a new poll.

Overall, 57 percent of US voters disapprove of the job Trump is doing, while only 35 percent approve, according to the Quinnipiac University survey, making him the most unpopular new president in four decades.

Trump’s job disapproval rating is up five points from the 52 percent Quinnipiac reported just two weeks ago.

Obama's worst rating in the poll came in 2013 when only 38 percent of voters approved of the job he was doing, which is still 3 points above Trump’s latest rating.

Former US President George W. Bush had a lower rating in last year of his presidency in 2008, but that, “it took eight years, two unpopular wars and a staggering economy to get there,” said Tim Malloy, the assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

Bush was viewed favorably by 28 percent of Americans at the time.

“President Donald Trump continues to struggle, even among his most loyal supporters,” said Malloy. “Many of them would be hard pressed to see even a sliver of a silver lining in this troubling downward spiral.”

Voters’ opinions of Trump remain largely negative when it comes to his personal qualities, including honesty and level-headedness.

The poll also found that 57 percent of voters think that the president does not care about average Americans, and a similar number, 55 percent, do not believe that he has good leadership skills.

Meanwhile, 70 percent of Americans disapprove of the way Republicans in Congress are handling their job, an increase of six points from two weeks ago, and 57 percent disapprove of the Democrats’ job performance.

“As President Trump’s approval tanks, Congress, especially Republicans, follow right behind him,” said Malloy.

Trump was one of the most unpopular candidates ever to get elected president. His opponent in the 2016 presidential election race, Hillary Clinton, also had high unfavorable ratings.
