US Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump faced hundreds of protesters during a presidential campaign rally in Albany, New York.

About 200 demonstrators gathered on Monday outside the Times Union Center in Albany, which drew more than 15,000 Trump fans.

Trump protesters were mostly confined to a barricaded area outside the arena.

Police maintained a safe distance between the protesters and Trump supporters on the sidewalk, who responded with their own chants and signs.

The Trump supporters appeared to be overwhelmingly white and largely male, especially on the floor near the stage where Trump spoke.

Several dozen protesters held signs with messages such as "Build a Wall Around Trump" and "No Hate in Our State" as well as "Bigotry Not Welcome Here."

They also chanted, "Hey-hey, ho-ho. Donald Trump has got to go."

One could see and hear the distrust and antipathy between both camps as they pointed fingers and tried to gain advantage over each other in their shouting match.

Counter-protests are a regular occurrence at Trump rallies, as the controversial billionaire’s campaign has been marked with racial hatred and outlandish policies.

His campaign has been defined by controversy from the beginning, including disparaging remarks about women, immigrants and Muslims.

The Republican frontrunner is rallying support to win 95 delegates at the New York state's Republican primary, scheduled for April 19.

Polls currently place Trump in the lead in the state with 54 percent of the vote. Republican rival candidate John Kasich has 22 percent of the vote, while Ted Cruz comes third with 15 percent.
