The national Iranian men’s handball team has conceded its third defeat in a row at the Olympic Qualification Tournament 2 in Sweden, slumping to the Slovenian side.

The Iranian outfit fell to the Central European squad 17-33 in its third and last match played at the multi-purpose and indoor Malmo Arena in Sweden’s southern city of Malmo on Sunday evening.

Iranian handball players had failed to clinch a berth in the forthcoming Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games the previous day following a 23-37 loss to Spain.

The 2016 Olympic Qualification Tournaments started on April 8 and wrapped up on April 10. They were held in Poland’s Gdansk, Sweden’s Malmo as well as Denmark’s Herning on the Jutland Peninsula.

Iran, Sweden, Slovenia and Spain vied in Tournament 2 to win a place at the 2016 Men’s Olympic Handball Tournament, which will be held from August 6-21 at the Future Arena in the Barra Olympic Park of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Poland, Macedonia, Chile and Tunisia were fighting for two Rio Olympics tickets in Tournament 1 contests in Gdansk.

Denmark, Croatia, Norway and Bahrain also tested their supremacy during Tournament 3 matches in Hening.
