Need more than protests to stop Trump: Analyst

“To those celebrating the anti-Trump protest in Chicago on March 11 as a major victory, I’d like to pose a serious question: What big picture goal do you believe was accomplished?” Mickey Z. told Press TV on Saturday.

American writer and political commentator Mickey Z. says the hate and violence existed long before Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump and we need to address the entire US system.

A large number of protesters clashed with Trump supporters in Chicago, Illinois, on Friday night, forcing the billionaire to cancel a rally there.

The cancellation, which came amid large demonstrations both inside and outside the event at the University of Illinois at Chicago, follows heightened concerns about violence in general at Trump’s rallies across the United States.

“People joyfully chanting Bernie Sanders’ name provoked Trump’s PR team to take steps to avoid another potential assault so soon after the last one,” he told Press TV on Saturday.

“If, by some miracle, that decision is the catalyst for Trump losing the nomination, are you any happier with Ted Cruz as Hillary Clinton's foil? Will you sleep any better telling yourself that Trump is ‘gone’ while the patriarchal/white supremacist/capitalist machine grinds on?” he stated.

“Shutting down’ one candidate or one party only makes the Land of the Free facade seem more real. Again: What big picture goal do you believe was accomplished?” he added.

“And I actually see some folks comparing that night to the alleged glory days of Chicago 1968. Reminder: Nixon won in 1968 - and George Wallace got nearly 14 percent of the vote,” the analyst concluded.

Trump, who has never held elected office, is leading the race despite the fact that his campaign has been marked by controversial statements, including with disparaging remarks about Mexican immigrants and Muslims.

He created a furor in the US and around the world by proposing a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims” entering the United States, following a mass shooting in California.
