The United States is a “violent” and “racist” society, in which white European settlers once used firearms to enslave and exploit blacks and commit genocide against the indigenous people, a researcher and historian in Washington says.

“America is a very violent, racist society that other people are going to eventually see; the veil will be taken off of America in 2016,” said Dr. Randy Short, who has a Ph.D. in African studies.

“America is a huge European, white settler colony no different from the ‘state’ of Israel,” he said in an interview with Press TV on Wednesday.

White, racist Americans are “obsessed” with owning and using guns because they are afraid of losing what they took by force from ethnic minorities, he added.

Gun laws are a sensitive issue in the United States with the Second Amendment of US Constitution protecting the right of the people to keep and bear arms.

On Tuesday, US President Barack Obama made a passionate plea about the urgency to fight gun violence in the country, blasting Congress for inaction in the face of thousands of deaths by firearms.

During a speech at the White House, Obama unveiled new restrictions on gun purchases, saying the "constant excuses for inaction" have to stop.

Obama blasted those members of Congress who have been taken “hostage” by the powerful gun lobby, and put their desire to get elected before the safety of American citizens.

“The gun lobby may be holding Congress hostage right now, but they can't hold America hostage,” he said to cheers from the crowd.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC), firearms are the cause of death for more than 33,000 people in the United States every year, a number that includes accidental discharge, murder, and suicides.
