Hillary Clinton threw Bernie Sanders under the bus: Trump

Leading US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump says Hillary Clinton threw Senator Bernie Sanders “under the bus” after his staffers allegedly exploited a brief breakdown of the firewall in the system to access information from the Clinton campaign.

“See, Sanders backed Hillary on E-mails at the debate, hurting himself, and then she threw him under the bus (but failed),” Trump tweeted on Saturday. “Disloyal person!”

At the first Democratic presidential debate back in October, Sanders defended Clinton on an ongoing email controversy, saying he was “sick and tired” of hearing about the FBI investigation into the private email server the former secretary of state maintained during her time in office. Trump at the time described the move as a “big mistake.”

On Friday, the Clinton campaign alleged that Sanders’ campaign may have broken the law by inappropriately accessing a Democratic National Committee (DNC)-controlled voter file and viewed proprietary information collected by Clinton.

“This is totally unacceptable and may have been in violation of the law,” Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook said.

“There may be damage here that can’t be undone, and I hope the Sanders campaign will acknowledge what they did, but we need assurances as soon as possible that they can’t continue to do more damage,” he continued.

The Sanders campaign said it had notified the DNC of a glitch which allowed campaigns to access rival candidates’ voter data two months ago, adding that they fired the staffer responsible for the breach.

On Friday, Sanders’ campaign filed a lawsuit against the Democratic Party after the DNC blocked the campaign’s access to sensitive voter information.

However, later in the day both sides came to an agreement that restored Sanders’ access to the data.

Before the incident, Sanders received his largest union endorsement from the Communications Workers of America on Thursday, and the backing of liberal group Democracy for America.

And on Friday, Sanders raised more than $1 million amid his campaign’s dust-up with the DNC, a person familiar with the campaign’s finances told the Washington Post.

On Saturday night, Sanders will take on Clinton at the Democratic presidential debate where a heated argument is expected between the two candidates seeking the Democratic nomination.
