A bomb attack on a mosque in the town of Shibam in northern Yemen has left several casualties.

Local residents said the attack was carried out while Muslim worshipers in the mosque were participating in Friday prayers.

Shibam is a city located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) west of the capital, Sana’a, in al-Mahweet Province.

The mosque attacked in Shibam on Friday is usually frequented by supporters of the Houthi Ansarullah movement.

Over the past months, the Takfiri Daesh terrorist group has carried out several bomb attacks on mosques similar to today’s attack.

In late September, two Daesh terrorists blew themselves up in the al-Balili Mosque in al-Safia neighborhood in the capital, Sana’a, killing at least 29 worshipers during Eid al-Adha prayers. A car bomb went off near Qubat al-Mahdi Mosque in the Old City of Sana’a on mid-June, killing three worshipers and injuring seven others. On July 17, several blasts targeted three mosques as well as the political office of the Houthi Ansarullah movement in Sana’a, killing at least 31 people.

On March 26, the regime in Riyadh launched its military aggression against Yemen with the aim of undermining the Ansarullah movement and restoring power to the fugitive former president, Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi.

Over 7,100 people have been killed and more than a million have been displaced since the Saudi aggression began, with militant groups, either al-Qaeda-related or those linked with Hadi, targeting civilians and security forces.
