Multiple bombings claim 14 lives in, around Iraqi capital

At least fourteen people have lost their lives and 42 others sustained injuries in a spate of bomb attacks in and around Iraq’s violence-plagued capital, according to the country's security and medical authorities.

A security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said six people were killed and 14 others wounded when an explosives-laden car went off  in the town of Mahmoudiyah, situated about 30 kilometers south of Baghdad, on Monday evening, the Arabic-language al-Baghdadia satellite television network reported.

Two other people lost their lives and nine others sustained injuries as an improvised explosive device blew up in the town of Madain, about 20 kilometers (14 miles) southeast of the capital.

Earlier on Monday, two civilians were killed and eight others wounded when a roadside bomb went off close to a restaurant in Baghdad’s eastern neighborhood of al-Mashtal.

Security forces immediately cordoned off the site of the attack, and ambulance workers ferried the wounded to a nearby hospital.

Additionally, a civilian was killed when a bomb explosion ripped through the Radwaniyah district in western Baghdad. Three people were also injured in the terrorist attack.

A fighter from the pro-government Popular Mobilization Units also lost his life and three of his comrades sustained injuries when a bomb blast targeted their vehicle in the town of Abu Ghraib, some 25 kilometers (15 miles) west of Baghdad, on Monday.

Separately, a bomb exploded in the town of Taji, located 30 kilometers (20 miles) north of Baghdad, killing two civilians and injuring five others.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attacks. However, Iraqi officials usually blame such assaults on the Daesh Takfiri terrorists.

The United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq says a total of 717 Iraqis were killed and another 1,216 wounded in acts of terrorism, violence and armed conflict in September alone.

According to the UN mission, the number of civilian fatalities stood at 537. Violence also claimed the lives of 180 members of the Iraqi security forces. A great portion of the fatalities was recorded in Baghdad, where 257 civilians were killed.

The northern and western parts of Iraq have been plagued by violence ever since Daesh Takfiri militants began their march through the Iraqi territory in June 2014.

Army soldiers and Popular Mobilization units have joined forces and are seeking to take back militant-held regions in joint operations.
