Republican senators introduce new anti-Iran bill
Failure to pass a resolution of disapproval against Iran nuclear agreement is pushing Republican war-hawks of the US Congress to resort to other methods against it.
Backed and funded by the pro-Israel lobby in the United States, the Republicans have been working hard to block any deal with Tehran on the one hand, and attack any legacy of President Brack Obama, including in the foreign policy sector, on the other.
A new legislation by two GOP lawmakers, introduced Wednesday, seeks to block lifting of sanctions against Iran on the pretext of “terrorism.”
Pushed by Sens. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.), the new bill echoes threats against Iran, voiced by Israeli authorities for long.
Kirk accused Tehran of “terror” in a statement, saying sanctions relief would "embolden Iran.”
Devastating blow to US credibility
In the House of Representatives, a similar legislation was expected this week, which the administration of US President Barack Obama threatened to veto.
The bill “effectively seeks to renegotiate the commitments reached by all of the P5+1, the EU, and Iran, and endorsed by the UN Security Council," the Office of Management and Budget said in a Wednesday statement, adding, it would “deal a devastating blow to America’s credibility.”
It also asserted that the talks with Tehran have focused on “one issue only” and that is its nuclear program.
Iran and the P5+1, which also includes Britain, Russia, China, France, and Germany, reached a historic nuclear accord in Vienna in mid-July after months of negotiations.
With enough support from the fellow-Democrats, Obama managed to save the agreement, dubbed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, on the Congress floor.
The American-Israeli Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) had deployed hundreds of lobbyists on the US Capitol to try to convince lawmakers to vote against the nuclear agreement.
Apart from that, the Republican-weighted Congress has been attacking other Obama initiatives such as ObamaCare.
