An explosion in the northern Afghan province of Jowzjan has killed four civilians and wounded 14 others, Press TV reports.
Local sources said on Saturday that the main target of the roadside bombing was a convoy of Afghan police forces.
Separately, Afghan security forces foiled a series of potentially devastating attacks in the capital, Kabul, and seized a large quantity of weapons.
Afghanistan’s National Directorate of Security (NDS) said in a statement on Saturday that its forces detained at least five militants and killed four others during a raid on a militant hideout in the Niazi village of Pul-i-Alam, the capital of Logar Province.
The militants had reportedly intended to carry out a string of deadly attacks on Afghan government complexes and militantly installations across the capital.
Afghan security forces have also killed more than 120 Taliban militants during a series of operations across Afghanistan over the past 48 hours. The Afghan Defense Ministry said in a statement on Saturday that the militants were killed in large-scale security operations. The statement also said at least seven Afghan soldiers lost their lives in militant attacks during the operations.
Also on Saturday, gunmen released 10 Shia Muslims belonging to Afghanistan’s Hazara community. The people had been abducted in the s eastern province of Ghazni. Fatemeh Rahimi of Ghazn’s Provincial Council said the Shias had been released thanks to mediation by local ethnic leaders.
The hostages had been kidnapped from the Qarabagh district and were being kept in Zabul Province, which is located to the south of Ghazni.
Afghanistan continues to face a security crisis nearly 14 years after the United States and its allies invaded the country in 2001 as part of Washington’s so-called war on terror.
