US police officer shoots black woman in Washington

Police shot and handcuffed a black woman in Washington DC.

A black woman has been shot and wounded by a US police officer in Washington DC after allegedly refusing to drop her knife.

The woman was armed with a knife and was walking towards one of the police officers at the scene, Police Chief Kathy Lanier said on Saturday.

She then refused to drop her knife and the police officer opened fire on her once she kept advancing, shooting her once in the chest.

Other officers rushed toward her and handcuffed the injured woman.

The incident took place in the Clay Terrace neighborhood, some nine miles away from the White House.

According to Metropolitan Police Department Commander David Taylor, the African-American woman was taken to a nearby hospital. She was in stable condition.

Eyewitnesses told the Washington Post that the woman had a “little steak knife” and was not given any warnings before being shot.

The identity of the woman and the officer who shot her were not released by police.

Police also asked eyewitnesses who captured the standoff on video to make their footage available to the officers.
