Two soldiers killed, 10 injured in Kashmir militant attack
At least two Indian paramilitary soldiers have lost their lives and another ten sustained injuries in a surprise attack on a convoy of paramilitary troops in Indian-administered Kashmir.
On Wednesday, unknown gunmen hidden in maize fields sprayed bullets at a convoy of Border Security Force (BSF) near the town of Udhampur, 250 kilometers (155 miles) south of the main city of Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.
“We had two fatal casualties of BSF soldiers, ten were injured in the attack,” local police official Danesh Rana said.
The gun battle ended by early afternoon, and security forces checked the area for any remaining attackers, police said.
One militant was killed during the raid, and another was arrested, Rana said.
Kashmir lies at the heart of more than 66 years of hostility between India and Pakistan. Both neighbors claim the region in full but have partial control over it.
Over the past 25 years, people in Kashmir have been engaged in pro-independence battles with the Indian government. New Delhi’s crackdown on the protests has left tens of thousands dead in the region.
Islamabad and New Delhi have fought three wars, two of them over Kashmir, since their 1947 independence from British colonial rule.
