N Carolina teen charged with ‘providing material’ support to ISIL

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation has charged a teen from South Carolina with providing material support to ISIL terrorists.

Justin Nojan Sullivan, 19, had planned to commit mass murder in the name of ISIL after buying a semi-automatic AR-15 at a June 20 gun show in the southeastern state, the FBI said on Monday.

Sullivan was arrested on Friday, a day before he had planned to make a purchase.

Sullivan was contacted by an undercover FBI agent on June 6, when he was offered help to join what Sullivan described as ISIL in North America, whose “doctrine is Guerilla Warfare in and out”.

“Justin Sullivan intended to commit violent acts against innocent people in the U.S. to support the terrorist organization, ISIL,” Special Agent in Charge John A. Strong said in a statement. “As demonstrated in this case federal, state, and local law enforcement will work tirelessly to protect our communities from those who plot to carry out terrorist activities of any kind.”

The ISIL terrorists, who were initially trained by the CIA in Jordan in 2012 to destabilize the Syrian government, currently control parts of Syria, Iraq, and Libya.

Last September, the US president announced an open-ended military air campaign to “degrade and ultimately destroy” the ISIL forces in Iraq and Syria by enlisting the support of scores of allies.

The US and some of its allies have been conducting airstrikes against the ISIL in Iraq and Syria since then.

During concluding remarks at the G7 summit in Germany earlier this month, US President Barack Obama acknowledged that his administration still lacks a “complete strategy” in pushing back the ISIL Takfiri group.
