The Romanian Foreign Ministry has sacked its spokeswoman after German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier was presented a gift printed with a map of France instead of Germany.

Brandusa Predescu has been fired and "the incident...projected a totally unfavorable image," said the Romanian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday.

Romanian Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu presented the botched gift to Steinmeier after a news conference marking 135 years of diplomatic ties between the two countries, in the Romanian capital Bucharest on Monday.

Aurescu and the printing company have personally apologized for the slip-up.

According to the Agerpres national news agency, which printed the brochure, the editor in charge of the gaffe has been punished with a 10-percent salary reduction for the next three months.

Following the incident, Romania referred to the German foreign minister’s response, who said that he had not even noticed that his country’s flag was mistakenly contained in the map of France, as diplomatic.
